Kidnappings and Hostage Situations are on the Rise Worldwide, with (I)NGO, and Multinational Staff Being increasingly Targeted

Recent trends indicate a significant upsurge in Kidnapping-for-Ransom (KFR) incidents, as well as a marked geographical shift. The Asia-Pacific region experienced the greatest number of cases in 2013, surpassing Latin America in both number of incidents and total monetary payout. KFR operations have grown in complexity and efficiency, while the threat of abduction by violent extremist groups has added a new dimension of risk . As a result, international development organizations and multinational companies have recognized an urgent need to develop comprehensive KFR prevention and management plans.
